DIY Training in a Scene Shop
When I was an undergraduate student, I really disliked having to take theatre tech classes. I was on a performance track and never felt I needed to invest time in learning how to work with set design, sound, and lighting. I had a knack for it, I just never thought I needed that kind of education.
Undergrad, however, was barely an introduction in comparison to my first year of grad school. As a first year grad student, I not only had to learn how to work with wood, electronics, and metal, I had to teach! It was kind of an interesting situation because although I did know a thing or two, I was learning and teaching, throughout my first semester. I helped build a raked stage, welded asymmetrical windows, repaired lighting, set up sound equipment, and learned how to use just about every power tool.
Not everyone gets to have this same experience, but if you’re going to “do-it-yourself,” here are a few tips I have learned that help you handle your own projects, home renovation, and more:
“Safety Firs”t is not something you just tell kids. If you’re going to do you own work, it’s important that you have the right safety equipment. Along with your new power tools, buy earplugs, goggles, work gloves, etc. before you start working.
Know how to use the equipment, too. I was given instruction, but you can teach yourself a lot about how these things work through safety manuals and guides online. Working with a partner is also helpful if you’re just starting out. You can learn and work together.
The old adage “measure twice, cut once” is incredibly valuable. I would say, more so, you want to be fully aware when you’re working. You want to know the plans and understand them before you implement them.
It can be very rewarding to work on your own but it takes time. You need to spend time learning and mastering the tools. If you don’t have the tools, you can definitely entrust a contractor to help you. It is fun, however, to stretch yourself and be creative and proud of a job well done.
